A recent visit to Norbury Wharf, has left me feeling refreshed and relaxed. So much so, that I thought I would share my thoughts with others. Staying at Wharf Cottage places you right at the heart of things. The lounge with it's big red comfy sofa's, stretches across the whole loft space at the top of the cottage and is huge. There is an open brick fireplace with wood and coal stacked ready to use if you fancy making a cosy fire later on. There is also a large kitchen dining area at one end. At every turn, where-ever you sit, your eyes will come to rest upon stunning views through the many windows that let the light flood in, giving you a sense of being outside. At the back of the lounge through the french windows, there is a large veranda, with table and chairs, perfect for sitting and taking in the surrounding countryside. Looking down on the Wharf at the front of the cottage with its little Bistro and chandlery shop, is interesting to say the least. The narrowboats come in and out with silent precision stopping for services and supplies. The Bistro is buzzing with visitors taking tea and coffee or the odd glass of wine out on the terrace, and the surrounding flowerbeds are planted up with beautiful spring blooms and the grass is cut and edged to perfection. Gazing down upon the scene, it's hard to resist going outside. There are many walks you can take around the wharf. Some of the boats have permanent moorings and have little patches of garden with vegetables and herbs. Across from the cottage is the Junction Inn public house with it's terrace and gardens. Looking from the Junction's terrace back across to the Bistro, it's easy to spot the tall dark commanding frame of Simon, the proprietor of Norbury Wharf, as he strides around keeping everything in sight; and David, his manager, who's expertise belies his young age. Always at hand to service the private boats as they arrive and to coach the people who have hired a day boat or a larger boat for the week from Simon. The fishing is also very good here. I have it in good authority, that the canal is teaming with carp. I actually saw a man pull a 2lb Bream out yesterday, followed by a slightly smaller one. He told me he had only used sweet corn as bate! It's the simple things like that as you stroll around, that have you un-winding in no time at all. The Bistro is still busy at 3pm and is headed by Jude, a partner in the business. Mick, another partner who is also Jude's husband, can be found in the dry dock, dealing with the repairs on the many boats that pass through. The staff work seamlessly together at Norbury Wharf to make your stay as enjoyable as possible, and as I sit back with a nice glass of wine on the Bistro's terrace I think I may have stumbled upon a little piece of heaven.
